This name has been used at least twice, in different contexts. H. Milne Edwards (1837) refers to a museum label, Gelasimus variegata, from Latreille which he synonymizes with Gelasimus tetragonon (Herbst, 1790). This label is a nomen nudum and has no priority. Later, Heller (1862) used Gelasimus variegatus for a species found in eastern India. For over 150 years, Heller's species was unknown and assumed to be a synonym of something else, but Shih et al. (2019) were able to show that it is a unique species, closely related to Austruca bengali.
